Even on vacation…

you can help others!

Josh and I were recently on vacation on the island of Cozumel. It is just off the east coast of Mexico, in the Caribbean. It’s a huge touristy island that has a lot of cruise ships and all inclusive resorts that bring in folks from all over.Crystal at the DIF in Cozumel with school supplies

Before we left for vacation, I went and spent about $30 at the dollar store. I bought books, pens, pencils, scissors, crayons, colored pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers, highlighters, and rulers. They easily fit into my checked bag.

Once we arrived at our resort, I asked a few of the workers about an orphanage. While there was no orphanage on the island, they did have an agency that supported vulernable families, DIF (Desarrollo Integral de la Familia).

DIF is involved with child welfare, elderly care, medical assistance, and food assistance to name a few. I received directions on how to get to their office by Ricardo, a staff member at our resort.

Josh and I rented a scooter for a day, and the DIF was our first stop. We found it with only one wrong turn. It was a nice building, with lots of people coming and going. We walked into a random office, where I used my best espagnol to ask the lady if she spoke English. She did not, but she found someone who did.

Crystal handing over the school supplies donation in CozumelI explained that we were in Cozumel on vacation, and that we had brought some school supplies and books for needy children. She was very thankful for the donation, and placed her hand over her heart in gratitude.

This short, meaningful exchange made my vacation. With just a little time and effort, we were able to share the wealth, so to speak, and help some kids out!
